GIVE WHERE IT MATTERS!
East Texas Cares Resource Center expanded its mission four years ago to provide all marginalized members of our community with social services to help them gain access to programs. Among our services are a food pantry to address food insecurity, long-term housing assistance, as well as short-term housing assistance and emergency assistance. We also provide health insurance assistance which covers the cost of insurance premiums and copays.
Our goal is to expand our services to persons that need emergency assistance, housing and other services. Please join us in making fulfilling our goals and our mission to provide more services to our community. We welcome you partnering with us! 15 year anniversary of the Tyler Junior
College Art Club Food Drive...
We are very grateful for the food donations from the Tyler Junior College (TJC) Art Club that we have received for the last fifteen years. It is because of donations like these that we are able to keep giving to the East Texas community.
Derrick White, professor of art and department chair, was gracious enough to tell us the story of this food drive from his point of view: "In 2006, I was contacted by Charlene Steed and Reed Hunsdorfer from Tyler AIDS Services about the idea of a friendly food drive competition between TJC, Texas College and the University of Texas at Tyler. Our art club agreed to participate and we ended up collecting over 1500 more food item than either of the other two schools. From then on, we have conducted a food drive in both the Fall (October) and Spring (April) semesters accumulating nonperishable food items to help stock the food pantry at what is now East Texas CARES Resources Center, Tyler, Texas. Students, art faculty, and area artists have also donated artwork for fundraising auctions benefitting East Texas CARES. The art club spends one month each semester amassing donations and then delivers the food items after the conclusion of the drive. Other TJC programs have been involved with the food drive over the years including TJC Surgical Technology, Behavioral Sciences, and Sigma Kappa Delta (the English Honor Society). Our largest record setting donation drive was in 2016. Art Club has consecutively donated to the East Texas CARES' food pantry twice a year for 15 years and counting (the only interruption being Spring 2020 when students did not return to campus after spring break due to COVID-19)." |
"I am scheduled to help deliver food tomorrow. I want to say I always enjoy my time helping with the deliveries! The entire staff is so friendly and kind to me. You and the clients all make me feel so appreciated for the little bit I do. I come home smiling and uplifted to think I have helped in some small way. I will encourage others to consider this service."
